In response to the challenge of HIV disease, CSI was founded in 1987, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida by Paul J. Cimoch, MD, FACP. At that time, there were few community organizations supporting people with HIV, even fewer HIV/AIDS activists and most physicians were reluctant to treat people with AIDS. Public funding for clinical research during these years was almost non-existent and treatment criteria were uncertain and subject to much speculation.
CSI was founded on the basis of two continuing principals:
A commitment to meticulous diagnosis, aggressive preventative medicine, careful monitored therapy and team-oriented holistic case management, and the creation of a clinical research environment utilizing state-of-the-art medical technologies and uncovering promising new therapeutic approaches.
Ahead of the consensus of the time, CSI offered its patients aggressive therapeutic options instead of the pervasive fatalism then present. Since 1990, CSI has provided the most advanced care for people with immune system disorders, being recognized as a Center of Excellence in Orange County.
